Damage control rarely makes for comfortable viewing. And so it proved with Environment Minister Peter Garrett, as it took the form of an unusually tall man peering over the heads of a roomful of reporters to seek meaningful connection with a bank of television cameras.
His oversized hands moved restlessly, emphasising key points amid the waterfall of words intended to stem the sense of crisis in his portfolio. It is a crisis made up of bungled solar rebates and ''green'' loans for households, tragically underlined by deaths linked to the government's ceiling insulation program.
